How did they all meet
Rowan and Alan met on a film set; Rowan was playing an New Zealand soldier, Alan was playing a German soldier and Rowan had to kill Alan. In 2015, they met Adam from working together on films and commercials.
Starcraft Beginnings
The first video released by VLDL to YouTube was a Starcraft 2 parody music video on 23 Nov 2011 called “Eight Pool”, based on the song “All Rise” by Blue. It went viral on the Starcraft subreddit and quickly reached tens of thousands of views. They decided that this was the direction they wanted to go in and to make more Starcraft parody videos.
This was also the birth of the Viva La Dirt League Name. Starcraft has a ranking system; bronze, silver, gold, etc, but they considered themselves below bronze in skill and so they added their own level, “Dirt League”. However, the name Dirt League was taken so they became “Viva La Dirt League”.
Birth of Bored
The parody music videos started to slow down and in late 2013 the team (Alan and Rowan), decided to change direction and make a different type of video. Alan had an idea for a series based around their experiences in retail and this led to the start of the Bored series.
The first episode did well, and on the release of the second video on 16 Dec 2013, they received their first taste of being a viral hit on Reddit, with it quickly gaining half a million views. Excited at their success, they continued to release Bored videos over the next two years, while still working full time in other jobs.
Adam joins VLDL
Adam joining in late 2015 was an injection of fresh energy and gave the team someone else to bounce ideas off. He was initially involved as an external script assistant for «Rekt». He was also a Starcraft gamer and loved the parody music videos, so they decided to make a new music video, «Legacy», which was released 9 November 2015.
At the same time they also filmed their first Hearthstone video, which was released on 1 December 2015. The video was so well received that they decided to go in a new direction, focusing more on skits than on music videos.
New Era of Skits: Epic NPC Man
The initial idea for Epic NPC Man came from a single line that Alan had written in their shared ideas drive:
“An NPC in a video game, who knows he is in a video game”.
Adam saw this line three or four months later and was super inspired. He immediately smashed out like 7 or 8 scripts, which became the first Epic NPC Man season (plus a few other episodes).
The release of the first Epic NPC Man video on 30th May 2016 marked the start of the Viva La Dirt League we know today.
Girl Gamer
The Bored episode Girl Gamer (released on 2 Sept 2016), was the first VLDL video to get millions of views after Alan created a meme of the skit and it went viral. It shows Ellie trying VR for the first time, having a blast destroying things annd Rowan and Adam freaking out watching her. The meme drove people to their Facebook and YouTube channels, and their audience started to significantly grow.
They crossed 100,000 page likes on 4 Nov 2016 on Facebook and 100,000 YouTube subscribers on the 2 April 2017.
Patreon
In November 2016, they launched their Patreon page. This allows fans to support VIVA directly and the money from Patreon allowed Rowan firstly, and subsequently Alan and Adam, to work full time on VLDL.
Initially, Rowan took over editing all the videos and then as the other guys were able to go full time as well, they each took editorial ownership of one of the series; Rowan on Epic Npc Man, Alan on Pubg and Adam on Bored.
The Patreon money also allowed them to start paying their crew for their time. Up to this point, as the crew were their friends, they had been helping them out on filming days.
When PubG came out, all the guys were super excited about the game. Player Unknown Battleground is a massive multiplayer Battle Royale style game where (in the main gameplay mode) 100 players whittled down to one winner. The initial game releases were fairly buggy which gave Viva lots of ideas for skits.
Luckily for Viva, New Zealand looks alot like Erangel (one of the maps in PubG) and filming quickly begun with items from the army surplus store. The first PubG episode was released on the 14th June 2017.
The PubG skits attracted a whole new audience, who then found their other series, particularly Epic NPC Man, and their subscribers continues to grow! On July 25th 2018, they crossed 500K subscribers on YouTube.
Twitch and Patreon Games
PubG was also revolutionary in terms of Twitch and how games are marketed. Viva started to stream PubG and other games regularly on [Twitch].
To date, it is the game used for Patreon games on PC. Patreon games happen once a month and Viva team up with their Epic Level Patreons and above in custom matches (see Patreon for more information).
Red Dead Redemption
With the PubG skits doing so well, they were slightly worried that that is what they were becoming known for and so they made sure to still try out new gaming skits. One in particular, Red Dead Logic (2019-), based on Red Dead Redemption was really well received and gave Viva the highest views per video so far.
1M YouTube Subscribers
On the 14th May 2019, Viva reached the huge milestone of 1 million subscribers on YouTube. They live streamed the countdown on YouTube.
Following the 1M subs, they all got Viva La Dirt League tattoos on their forearms. In true viva fashion, they also filmed it.
Bigger and Better
In Dec 2019, they had over 1.5k Patreon supporters and were now able to hire editors to handle all of the videos, giving them more time to work on ideas, scripts and filming.
The Patreon money and donations are also going towards improved production quality, props, extras for Epic NPC Man and special episodes such as the White Shirt Saga in Bored.
They are also able to work more often with Mike Glasswell and his team at Mukpuddy Animation Studios, who had previously provide a number of animations, including the whole of the Escort_Quest episode.
Baelin’s Route
Their plan is to prove that they can handle a short film, with the end goal of being able to make full length films in the future.
Isolation Games
On the 14th March 2020, during the Coronavirus lockdown, Viva launched their new DnD channel and started a new DnD campaign with their DM Robert Hartley.
